Carnelian – historical use and beliefs
Carnelian, also known as cornelian, is a translucent type of chalcedony quartz in its original form.
It is associated with both the root and the sacral chakras. It clears imbalances and enhances the energy flow within the body. Carnelian helps establish a better connection with your surroundings and grounds people who meditate.
Carnelian was a highly prized stone in the past, across civilisations. In China, India, Nepal, and Tibet, people traditionally used it for protection and often set it with turquoise and lapis lazuli to enhance its powers. This practice was also followed in the Egypt of the Pharaohs, who wore it to protect both the living and the dead, and symbolised it as a symbol of renewal and loyalty. The Pharaohs believed that the stone had supernatural qualities, and used it as an Eye of Horus as protection against the Evil Eye. They also placed carnelian on the neck of a mummy to ensure safe passage and a peaceful afterlife.
The Greeks and Babylonians believed that carnelian would bring luck to those who wore it. The Romans saw the stone as a symbol of courage and power, usually worn in rings and signets that were used as seals to seal documents as the wax did not stick to the surface of the stone.
Those who wear or use the stone believe in its ability to protect them from negative energies. It helps to dispel negative emotions such as anger, fear, jealousy and resentment. It also helps to deal with sorrow and depression.
Carnelian brings peace and serenity to those of us who feel troubled and lets us better deal with trauma and emotional wounds.
